God is faithful to His promises. Point blank. But occasionally we are met with the crossroad of the Lord asking for the dream to reside with him, and for you to pick Him again.
This is the time of the crossroads. Where we have to decide to believe that God is still good, and even when we don’t see, we believe. I want to be willing to ask; are my desires taking up room that is meant for Christ?
2 Corinthians 1:20 says, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” Absolutely, we need to say amen to what the Lord has spoken to us in the Word, but also to us personally. It is our duty to believe that which the Lord has said. Otherwise, what kind of love relationship is this? And us, what kind of lover?
But there is the test of letting go, yielding to God and letting him have our dreams. God is looking for trust. So, this is what I have found I must do right now in trusting the Lord.
Choose God first
Choosing God as your first priority means trusting God’s goodness and faithfulness. Knowing that God can hold life together better then we ever could. More will happen when we trust him. Often this is hard because we do not know what is beyond what we can see. What would happen if you trusted God with everything, every dream? Let God be the love of your life, putting Him second to nothing. Even the idea of disappointment.
The promises of God we will see fulfilled. Especially the big key ideas. For the kingdom of Heaven. For God coming. For love breaking captives free. For purity. For the graceful oaks of righteousness for His glory, which is your life.
Your life is a promise fulfilled.
Take Abraham, who waited until old age for the fulfillment of the promise of a child. This child who would be hope fulfilled, his legacy, the fruit of his life, the beginning of the nation Israel.
When Abraham finally did receive the child, Isaac, the Lord told him to slay him in sacrifice. Because his promise was threatening to take place in his heart that was for God. Abraham believed still in the goodness and faithfulness of God, knowing that if he gave up his promise God would be faithful to bring it back. Even if it meant resurrecting Isaac. But Abraham didn’t need to kill Isaac, he just needed to make the decision that moved Isaac out of that place in his heart.
Make the decision to move that which needs to be moved out of your heart. And pray that you would be able to protect your heart for God. Pray to love God desperately with complete abandon.
Those who love God will obey him. (John 14:21) Which doesn’t always mean going or doing, but letting go.
Let God interrupt you
Sometimes when we get caught up in gaining a promise, or in relishing in it, our pride sneaks in, takes our hand, and leads us away from a place of worshipping God for the promises that He has fulfilled.
Let God interrupt you. Let him take you back to the place of humility. For that is the place of freedom. Let God heal you. Ask Him to heal you. Ask Him to humble you.
God is so good. Because He is faithful to us. When we start to hear the whisper of vanity, self-righteousness, pride, that’s when Christ, the Chief Shepherd calls to us. He who is the gate for the sheep, calls to us, and we enter into him. This is where we let go of ourselves, humble ourselves, and die to self.
Step past yourself into God.
Proverbs 3: 5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Redirect your gaze
Redirect your eyes from the promise God told you to let go of, and look at him. With His burning eyes of fire, let Him purify you for His work. Take in His presence. Worship Him with adoration, and drink of His presence. Let him satisfy you with His simple presence.
God brought me back to Psalm 37:4. Which says, “ Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” And what I believe He was saying was that He did not want the desire fulfilled to become the delight of my heart. For that spot is reserved for God alone.
What a gift, to be able to let go of a dream, know it is safe, and trust enough to fully delight in the Lord, with all my heart.
And a side note on those grieving their promise. It’s okay to grieve with the Lord. You have fought and given your heart to the thing you felt called into. But to give it to God is not a sign of failure. It is a sign that says, “My God is bigger than even the dreams He gave me. My life is in Him, and Him, in me. That makes my life boundless in possibility.” So cry and grieve. And then celebrate the fact that your dream is with God, and with God their is more then you could ask, think, or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).
Get Real With the Dream Giver
It is when we have given everything to God that there is this beautiful, and terrifying, blank slate. And what better time than now then to get real with God about the bottom line of what is going on.
God is the dream giver. He gave you the dream, and the promise of it. So ask your questions, and ask for broader vision. There is more.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
And as the Lord reminded me I’ll remind you: He is the fulfillment to His promises to us. Everyday. Him, the water that eternally satisfies, is what fills our cups.
“Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord! Come and quench this thirsting of my soul; Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more – Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!” (Fill My Cup, Lord – Hymn)
May you find peace resting in the one who was the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
